What will the NHX look like?

The NHX roadway will be a four-lane, boulevard-style road (two travel lanes in each direction) with a turn lane or landscaped median in the middle. It will have a speed limit of 35 mph and a sidewalk or shared-use path on each side. Crosswalks and bump-outs (where feasible) will be included at street corners to make crossing the street easier and safer.Below is a conceptual rendering of what portions of the NHX roadway could look like.

When will construction start?

Construction on Breakout Projects will start in the next few years (visit the Breakout Projects page for more information). Construction on the rest of NHX, however, will not begin for several years yet. The NHX will be built in stages, most likely as a series of smaller individual projects, due to the magnitude of cost. We’re currently focusing on the West Section due to the condition of the 100-year-old Black Street Bridge. West Section projects include local roadway improvements along North B Street and a new bridge across the Great Miami River. Once funding is secured, we’ll be able to proceed with detailed project design, utility relocation, and right-of-way acquisition. It will take between three and five years to complete these tasks before construction can begin. It will take another several years to build the bridge. Construction timing for the Central and East sections, which extend from US 127 to SR 129, is unknown. Like the West Section, a considerable amount of planning and preparation must be completed and funding must be secured before detailed design and construction planning can begin. It will likely take between 20 and 30 years to complete the NHX in its entirety. Due limited funding sources, funding will come from a combination of federal, state and local resources over multiple years. Although we expect work to progress primarily from west to east, we will pursue funding opportunities for all parts of the project as they become available. This could shift the order in which some elements of the project are built.Note: Several proposed intersection improvements have been advanced as standalone projects to make local travel easier and safer in the near term and to take advantage of recent funding opportunities. The Preferred Alternative for the NHX does not travel through the Chem-Dyne site. Therefore, the site will not be impacted by the project.
